Headlamps for survival and preparedness

Nighttime can be pretty scary when you are lost outside or searching for someone in the dark. The traditional method of finding your way around would be to use a flashlight, but this requires you to use one of your hands to hold it. Since you cannot see 100% clearly with a flashlight, you will need to use your hands to feel around so that you know where you are going. This is similar to how a blind person finds their way around because they cannot see anything and must use their sense of touch to know where they are. However, it doesn’t have to be this complicated for you. There is a simple tool that seeing people can use which will allow them to find their way around in the dark more clearly while keeping their hands free in the process. This tool is called a headlamp. It is basically a head strap with a light attached to the outside of it. The way it works is you put the strap around your head and the light shines outward right in front of you. This means whichever direction you are facing, the light will shine in that direction and you will get to see what is in front of you with the convenience of not having to hold anything in your hands.

Petzl Headlamps

Petzl is one of the well known manufacturers of headlamps. Petzl headlamps are priced little higher than regular headlamps but you get what you pay for.

Besides being a hands free device, there are other advantages to having a headlamp in a survival situation. For one thing, Petzl Tikka XP 2 headlamp is lightweight and can easily fit into any emergency supply kit. Plus this new model has LED lighting, which is brighter and shine at a much wider radius than flashlights. They also use less battery power and are even rechargeable with their lithium battery (Petzl Accu Core).

Petzl Tikka XP 2 can be used with regular AAA batteries:

Petzl Accu CORE Rechargeable Lithium Battery can be purchased together with headlamp or separately:

It can be charged 300 times using included charger, after this it will still work but the battery’s capacity is about 30% lower than initially.

This means you don’t have to keep running out to the store and buy new AAA batteries like with the older models. But since this headlamp is generally used for survival purposes only, chances are you won’t be using the battery power often unless you are in an emergency situation. The most common emergency situation for requiring a headlamp would be when your car breaks down in a secluded area, like in the woods or the desert. Instead of just waiting around your car hoping someone will pass by, you can walk to the nearest town and get help. The headlamp will be the perfect tool in this situation because it will help you find your way in the dark and signal to anyone nearby that you are there. If your headlamp is fully charged, then you will have over 4 hours of battery life in Maximum mode and 35 hours in Economic mode before needing to recharge again. This gives you plenty of time to find help before it is too late. You can also connect Petzl Tikka XP 2 headlamp to your PC and personalize your lighting using OS by Petzl.

Petzl Tikka XP 2 has five lighting modes (three continuous and two blinking) and Wide Angle lens with open-close feature, allowing you to choose between a long distance focalized beam and flood beam proximity lighting.

Red light will preserve your night vision or to become a blinking light for safety purposes:

Just remember when you go shopping for a headlamp, make sure you buy one that is durable and water resistant. If you are outside in an emergency situation then chances are it will be raining, which only makes finding your way in the dark much more difficult. Don’t worry though because headlamps are very inexpensive. One of the most expensive models is $60, which is an affordable investment for a tool that could be the means of your survival. Therefore, it is definitely worth the money.

Emergency thermal (space) blanket
Emergency thermal (space) blanket

The emergency thermal blanket has many names. The most popular nickname is the space blanket because it was developed by NASA to protect astronauts from rough space environments and temperatures. More importantly, these blankets are resistant to the ultraviolet radiation from the sun. They are made out of a material called silver mylar. This material is made up of a plastic called polyimide, which is heat resistant and coated with a special metallic reflecting material to drive away radiation. Since outer space gives astronauts zero protection from sunrays because there is no atmosphere, the emergency thermal blanket is their only protection. The silver mylar material is built into their space suits, and was even built into the lunar modules of the Apollo era.

In modern times, space blankets have expanded beyond astronomical use. Now they are a popular consumer item generally found in first aid and emergency survival kits. The number one use for it is to protect yourself from the cold if you are stranded outside. Despite the thinness of the silver mylar, it can actually keep a person very warm when completely wrapped around their body. It does this by preventing your body from losing heat due to the cold. Space blankets also offer protection against water and wind as well. For example, if you were outside during a thunderstorm with heavy winds and rain, you would barely feel any impact from the wind on your skin if you were wrapped in a space blanket. As for the rain, none of your clothes underneath the blanket would get wet. This will come in very handy if you are stranded in the woods and want to prevent yourself from catching pneumonia during a heavy rainstorm. Plus if you have ever watched a marathon runner finish a race outside in cold weather, you will likely find somebody giving them a space blanket as soon as they are done. This is a safety precaution to prevent the runner from getting hypothermia.

In pop culture, space blankets and silver mylar have often been associated with aliens and extraterrestrial life. Some claim that aliens were the inventors of the material and that it was discovered by military intelligence after the UFO Roswell crash of 1947. Some may believe this while others will claim it to be science fiction. One thing is for sure, silver mylar is definitely a very unique material that is light weight and easy to use in an emergency situation outdoors.

Ebola is a highly contagious and deadly disease that has already infected many people of West Africa. If you are planning to travel to any of the West African countries, like Sierra Leone, Nigeria, or Guinea, then you might want to reconsider. This is the first way to protect yourself because going to where the disease is widely spread will increase your risks of obtaining it. For most people, this will not be a problem because West Africa is not a popular tourist attraction. However, there are those who come to West Africa to treat Ebola patients and will have to take extra precautions.

Like any disease, the best way to protect yourself from getting Ebola is to wash and sanitize your hands as often as possible. Try to use a hand sanitizer with alcohol because that will be more effective in cleaning yourself. If you are around a lot of blood, especially the blood of infected patients, then avoid getting that blood on you. This also goes for any other form of bodily fluids from a patient, such as urine or saliva. The best thing to do is wear a surgical mask and a scrub suit when you are around these fluids. You should also wear latex gloves to further reduce your chances of exposure, but you must still sanitize your hands afterwards. But no matter what, never touch the body of a dead Ebola patient.

If you have been around anyone with Ebola and are starting to experience flu-like symptoms, then you should seek medical care immediately. These symptoms could be fatigue, fever, muscle pains, headache, vomiting, diarrhea and unexplained bleeding. Chances are you will get all of these symptoms at once if you have Ebola. The earlier you seek medical attention the better chance you will have of surviving.

It is easier for people who have been around Ebola patients to recognize their symptoms and take proper precautions. The scary part is if Ebola ever breaks out into normal society amongst people who are not ready or prepared for it. That is why it never hurts to wash your hands thoroughly after meals or even shaking somebody’s hand. Keep yourself clean and get regular doctor checkups to make sure you are healthy. Then check the news periodically to see the latest coverage on Ebola and if it is spreading to your area. If they say it is then take extra measures to sanitize yourself every chance you get.
